Saints Match Report
Last Saturday the saints traveled to 3rd place Binfield and recorded a terrific away win 2-1 with both goals coming in the first half courtesy of Josh Murphy.
That great all round team performance being followed by the visit of Woodstock Town last night to SJP in the 1st Round of the Hellenic League Challenge Cup. The saints reached the final last year being narrowly and unluckily beaten.
Last night’s visitors had not had the best of starts to their season and it was evident from the onset that they were going to defend in depth and numbers. Often having 6 and 8 at the back making it extremely difficult to find space and the telling ball.
The Saints dominated throughout and goodness knows what the possession stats must have been, however having had a number of attempts on goal they were held by a very resilient Woodstock team to a single goal from Chris Jordan. Half Time Saints 1 Woodstock 0
The Saints continued in similar fashion in the 2nd half, the supporters often hearing shouts from the opposition, we are being embarrassed here, let them have the ball in possession while they dropped and played just in front of their penalty area. Strength in numbers being the visitor’s motto. Dan Farrell in the saints goal as in the first half was somewhat a spectator as the Saints looked to extend their lead.
This they did with 3 second half goals, a penalty from Lewis Baldwin, Josh Murphy making it 3 in 2 games and finally Ellis Minott adding the 4th. In truth it could have been many more, 2 efforts cleared off the line, several good saves from the visiting keeper and a number of attempts narrowly off target.
The Saints are back in league action on Saturday away to Highworth (nr Swindon). Last season we beat them away early doors in the Floodlit cup 3-0 and in the league lost narrowly 2-1. It should be a close entertaining game but a game the Saints have a very good chance of winning and bring up the 4th away win of the season.
