Corby Town 0-2 Brackley Town Pre-season 15 July 2017
Byrne and Walker on target for Saints
Brackley’s second pre-season game ended in a win at Corby Town’s Steel Park. A goal in each half settled the result but Saints dominated possession and restricted The Steelmen to few chances on goal. Brackley’s Dan Farrell wore the goalie’s jersey for the home side and was the busier of the ‘keepers.
Andy Brown’s 20th minute header into the ground bounced up and over the bar before Shane Byrne put his side ahead just after the half hour, finishing powerfully after good work on the right by Steve Diggin.
After the break Kevin Wilkin made the first of five substitutions with Glenn Walker entering the fray. Jordan Williams headed over from Walker’s corner before Corby twice threatened, first from a goalmouth scramble and then when Jordan Crawford shot wide.
But Brackley were then denied three times themselves in quick succession as the Corby defence could not clear their lines after a break-away attack started by Walker from his own half.
Alex Gudger struck a free-kick onto the cross-bar before Walker doubled the lead with ten minutes remaining and in spectacular fashion firing in off the cross-bar from 25 yards.
Manager Kevin Wilkin reflected on the value of the game. “This was another useful work out,” he said. “The playing surface did not make it easy so we had to work hard but it is about match fitness and taking a look at certain players and trying one or two things out. It was a valuable afternoon and we have four more games to play and more work to do.”
Wilkin’s side takes on another local side Kettering Town at St James Park on Tuesday with kick-off at 7.45pm.
Saints starting line-up: Lewis, Lowe, Gudger, S.Byrne, Williams, Dean, Franklin, Armson, Diggin, Brown, A.Walker.
