Reflecting on pre-season preparations so far Jimmy Armson spoke following Brackley’s first game, an entertaining win against League One Shrewsbury Town.
“It’s the first time I can remember playing a pre-season game in the pouring rain,” he says. “It was a good work-out and we played well, especially first half. I felt a bit rusty but it’s good to get out there playing again.”
“I’ve had a good break and a good rest and have been away with my family. I was ready for a break but then you start to miss it and now I am ready to go,” says the midfielder who finished with 25 goals to his name last season. “Pre-season training is always hard but I am naturally quite fit and have come back feeling good.”
“It is good to be back – same car share but I enjoy the journeys down. Turning into the new club car park was a nice surprise and the club-house is fantastic – it’s good to see the club investing in the facilities and ambitious to keep improving in all areas.”
Armson is clearly excited about the prospects for his Brackley team this season including the four new additions to the squad. “I played at Solihull Moors with them,” he says. “They are good players who will bring something extra to the squad and real competition for places especially in the midfield. Jack [Byrne] is an excellent addition who will add extra steel and I enjoyed playing tonight with Andy Brown. He brings others into the game and is so strong, especially in the air, which you saw already from tonight’s game. I know Andy well having been with him at Solihull for a season and we were together at Nuneaton for two seasons.”
Armson took on near-cult status with some supporters in his first season at St James Park but is clearly still frustrated by falling just short of a play-off place last season. “I think the league will be even stronger this year,” he says. “We are determined to do well in the league this time and at least make the play-offs. Another good run in the cups would be nice also of course because we really enjoyed the cup success last time. A good start is important and with FC United the visitors for our opening game it’s one I’m looking forward to.”
