U16’s – Heather Juniors 3 v 1 Brackley Town

MJPL Result – Heather Juniors 3 Brackley Town 1

A 70 mile drive in torrential rain to this away fixture was rewarded by the first 20 minutes played in a further downpour – not the ideal conditions for our first match of the new Season, especially when the Brackley faithful were subjected to the Home Team scoring after three minutes, albeit against the early run of play……

Our Boys have had an excellent pre-season under the stewardship of Manager Andy Thompson, they went in to this game with a confidence missing at the start of last Season and with a Team Spirit that augers well for the matches ahead – and so it was unfortunate that they went behind very early to a long ball on our left, flicked over our defender and then squeezed between keeper Jamie Berry and the post – a goal straight out of the Leicester City coaching manual. To their credit Our Boys bounced back from this early setback and competed well creating a number of close chances – from the outset it was clear that Brackley wanted to play their passing game against a team that preferred the more direct approach. A clash of cultures followed as each team played to their strengths – with five minutes of the first half to go Heather scored again, this time from a long ball down our right side and an overhit cross that was fired back in to the area for their lofty centre forward to expertly head home.

The second half started with Heather piling in to the attack eager to extend their lead, Brackley were under the cosh again and Heather got their reward when we failed to clear and the ball was powered in past keeper Owen Latty for a Heather three nil lead. Brackley resistance might have crumbled but instead we picked up the effort – tackles were strong and effort was maintained as we attacked again and again, just reward came from an excellent passing move between Keegan Giles and Fabio Lopes passing on to Jenson Chant – now in the opposition box Jenson took a one/two with Harry Dunham for Jenson then to slot home, pulling the score back to 3-1.

All in all Our Boys can be satisfied with much of today’s play – the result is secondary to the performance where the performance is structured and the game plan adhered to. Well done Gentleman
